GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)--Location, location, location, a familiar saying in real estate but also just as useful for the coffee business. In this edition of 11 Cares for Business Aaron Luna shows us how one business owner is taking a location and adding a little atmosphere in hopes of creating the perfect blend for customers.
The desire to blend the finest beans, a passion for the perfect cup, a need for constant caffeine. Attributes you'd expect to find in a coffee shop owner. Qualities
Roasted Espresso and Subs owner Alex Mackey doesn't have. "I can't think of one good reason why I started a coffee shop, really I just fell into this," says Mackey.
Well at least he might have the need for caffeine. Mackey says his favorite coffee drink is, "Just straight up espresso. Picks me up, never lets me down, probably going to give me a heart attack."
Mackey first broke into the coffee business by selling coffee from a cart. Then he moved inside a downtown store and finally ended up in a building on the corner of 5th and Colorado. Mostly because he loves the downtown area. "We have a lot of fun our customers have a lot of fun. It's colorful, there's always stuff going on," says Mackey.
Joking aside he does make a pretty good cup of Joe but the sign does say espresso and subs. Loyal customer Tim D'Andre gets the build your own sub. "One of the lovely employees makes it for me every time I come in, " he says. Picking up his sandwich he lists off the ingredients. "Some turkey some salami, jalapenos, tomatoes, Sriracha sauce," he says. "Maybe some day they'll put his up on the menu and call it the doctor Tim," he jokes.
But another big draw to Roasted, besides the food and drink, is the outside patio. Mackey says, "If they want to paint outside if they want play music outside, if they want to hang outside, as long as they buy a cup of coffee they're cool with me."
Come July 1st, Roasted will celebrate its second birthday and as it heads into the terrible twos Mackey admits it's been a learning process. "There's probably a few people out there watching this and saying, 'oh that place is horrible,' give us another try we might not be as horrible," he says. But that doesn't mean it hasn't been fun every cup along the way.
Roasted is open Monday through Thursday till 9 pm, Saturday they close at 10 pm and on Sundays they close between six and 8 pm.
