Four Winds Coffee and Tea provides coffee with a message

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - A coffee shop on a street corner is nothing out of the ordinary. Even a corner church seems standard. You might be hard pressed to find a coffee shop in a church on the corner. But there is one.

At the Four Winds Coffee and Tea shop, barista Sarah Grisier serves up more than just a quick pick-me-up, she's also serving up a spiritual pick-me-up. Grisier says, "Get people here and then get them plugged into the local churches."

The Four Winds is the brain child of the Christ Center, a group who's mission is to witness to college students. But in this case, using a more subtle manner. Grisier says, "We wanted to have sort of a neutral place were people would feel comfortable, where Christians would feel comfortable bringing their non-Christian friends."

The Four Winds plays Christian music, posts Christian activities, nothing up front, or in your face, but they're not hiding their beliefs either. Which some customers find refreshing. Nicole Oman stops into the shop to grab a coffee and study for a test, "I guess it's not my reason for being here but its definitely an added bonus for sure," she says.

The Four Winds was loosely modeled after several churches on the Front Range. But some think their approach might be a touch too light to really make a difference. Tracy Boutilier says, "I don't know if it really plays so much influence here because you don't see as much of it around."

For others it's the quiet testimony that the staff and customers provide that make the most difference. Raenelle Muniz was talking with friends and playing around on Facebook while at the shop. She says, "I've asked friends to come to church and they're just like, 'Oh, that's not really my thing,' Where here it's like, 'Hey let's just go get coffee and you know the music is playing, there's a difference kinda in people and their friendliness, its not just your typical person working in the coffee shop."

For Grisier, that's like a double shot for the soul. "We've already had great stories of people bringing their friends in that really didn't want to have anything to do with church and we've already had people come to Christ here, which is awesome," she says.

Four Winds Coffee and Tea is located on the corner of 12th and Bookcliff in Grand Junction.
