GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) _ After less than a year in business, the smashburger on 12th Street near Mesa State College has closed. The owners say they've come up with a new concept and will be cooking up food again soon.
Jim Kegal, co–owner of smashburger, tells 11News the store was performing well but the decision was made that Grand Junction only needs two locations.
Kegal says he and his Denver business partner have come up with a new restaurant concept that doesn't include burgers and will be geared more toward Mesa State students. Kegal hopes to announce the new fast casual restaurant soon.
Smashburger employees were told Sunday afternoon the location was closing. Kagel, who also owns Subway shops, says the employees can work at Subway or other Smashburger locations.
The other smashburger restaurants on 1st and Grand and in Clifton are still open.
