Denver (AP) Colorado's senators have split on temporarily suspending oil shipments to the federal emergency reserve, with democrat Ken Salazar voting “yes” and republican Wayne Allard casting the lone “no” vote.

The senate voted 97-1 Tuesday to halt the shipment of tens of thousands of barrels of oil a day to the strategic petroleum reserve until the price of oil drops. The house also backed the move.

Salazar says halting the acquisitions would provide relief for U.S. Consumers by making more petroleum available.

But Allard says voting to stop the shipments without increasing domestic production is a disservice to the public.

Oil prices shot up past $126 a barrel Tuesday.
