Denver (AP) Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar could be a cabinet member by the end of the day.
The Democrat has already sent a resignation letter to senate leaders in anticipation of becoming president-elect Barack Obama’s interior secretary.
In his letter, Salazar said his resignation would take effect when he is confirmed, which he said could be soon after Obama is inaugurated Tuesday. Salazar’s confirmation hearing last week went smoothly, and there is little doubt his confirmation will clear the senate.
The remaining two years of Salazar’s term will be filled by Denver Public Schools superintendent Michael Bennet, a fellow democrat chosen by Gov. Bill Ritter
