Fire officials say they know the cause of a fire in the Redlands that scorched around 40 acres and forced the evacuation of 20 homes.
The fire broke out off of Broadway at around 11 o'clock Wednesday morning.
Officials used reverse 911 calls to warn residents in the Preserve Subdivision area to get out.
The fire also forced the closure of Broadway for hours while crews battled the immense flames. Thick weeds, grass and tamarisk fueled the flames.
The fire damaged several fences. One firefighter suffered minor burns while fighting the flames and a fire engine was moderately damaged when the fire surrounded it.
The fire burned dangerously close to several homes but fire fighters held their ground protecting every one of them.
The fire was contained just before 2:00 p.m.
Evacuees were allowed back home at around 4:00p.m.
