There’s a program in Mesa County that has been helping first-time expectant mothers for the past nine years.
The Nurse-Family Partnership Program held its first-ever reunion at Columbine Park on Wednesday.
The program pairs nurses with first-time low-income expecting mothers.
Nurses begin home visits early in the mother's pregnancy and continue until the child's second birthday. They focus on things like improved parental health and the child's development.
Families that participate in the Nurse-Family Partnership see less child abuse, neglect and injuries. Mothers are also more likely to work and children are usually more ready for school. There is also reduced involvement in crime.
"It just helps to have someone there to guide you when some people don't have that person in their life," said program nurse Jillian Miller.
The Nurse-Family Partnership Program has already helped 600 women and is currently assisting 200.
For more information on the program which is offered through the Mesa County Health Department call 254-4100 or visit www.health.mesacounty.us.
