Jersey City, N.J. (AP) John McCain is promising to make environmental issues a focus of his presidency.

McCain, campaigning today in New Jersey, said there is “no doubt our environment is globally challenged,” and added that he was proud of his environmental record.

The presumed republican nominee listed working toward a global climate change agreement that includes India and China as one the priorities would have as president.

New Jersey environmentalists immediately challenged McCain's record on the environment, saying it put him “in lockstep with the Bush administration.”

A recent Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey poll suggested that either Barack Obama or Hillary Rodham Clinton would beat McCain in New Jersey in November
