Denver (AP) A man arrested in Denver over the weekend says his friends made racist statements about Barack Obama, and discussed killing Obama on the day of his presidential nomination acceptance speech.

When asked if he thought his friends were really trying to kill Obama, Nathan Johnson told Denver's KCNC-TV --quote-- “looking back at it, I don't want to say yes, but I don't want to say no.”

Johnson was interviewed while being held in jail on drug charges. He said he wasn't involved in any plot.

Authorities say they're investigating whether Johnson's friend, who was arrested in Aurora with rifles, ammunition and drugs in his truck, made statements threatening Obama. But they also emphasize that the man never posed a “credible threat” to the candidate or to the Democratic National Convention.

The action started around 1:30 a.m. Sunday when 28-year-old Tharin Gartrell was pulled over for swerving.

Police say officers found two rifles, including one with a scope, a bulletproof vest, boxes of ammunition, walkie-talkies and suspected narcotics in the vehicle.

FBI spokeswoman Kathy Wright confirmed the FBI was investigating reports the man had threatened Obama, who will be in Denver this week to accept the Democratic nomination for president.

Federal and local authorities plan a news conference for this afternoon.
