Burbank, Calif (AP) John McCain has used his 13th appearance on the “Tonight Show” to defend his wife's family wealth.

Some of McCain's time with Jay Leno was spent trading age jokes and cracks about how many houses he owns. McCain confessed he didn't know how many homes he and his wife Cindy have. Democrats have played that up as a sign that McCain's out of touch with average Americans.

But McCain also said he was proud of his father-in-law, calling him someone who “made the American dream” with his success in business and charitable giving. The source of the family's wealth is a Phoenix beer distributorship.

The Arizona Senator also teased Leno about becoming his running mate, since the comedian is leaving the “Tonight Show” next year.
