Parent concerned her daughter had to take a breathalyzer test

Ashley Prchal

FRUITA, Colo. (KKCO) - A local parent says she’s very concerned about a recent test at a school dance. Last Friday Fruita Monument High School held a Wild West Student Dance. Kids lined up to get in the doors but first they had to take a random breathalyzer test. The parent, who didn’t want to be identified, says even though her daughter passed the test, she didn’t know anything about her child being required to take a breathalyzer in the first place. And she’s wondering why she wasn’t informed. School District 51 says all of the students are aware that they could be randomly tested at any school event. The District says students are not forced to take breathalyzer tests. However, if they decide against it they won’t be allowed to participate in that school function. Parent signatures are not required because local law enforcement independently administers the breathalyzers. The goal is to cut down on underage drinking.
