What's In A Name?

One Road, multiple names. A look at why, in Grand Junction, the name of the road can change without the driver making a turn.

What’s in a name?
As I revealed in my last blog, "Getting Around in Grand Junction," I’m terrible at giving directions.   There are a couple reasons for this. First of all, I’m a control freak, which means I drive 99% of the time. Because I’m always the one driving, I am often getting and following the directions instead of giving them. But the second reason I am terrible at giving directions in Grand Junction, is because one street is called multiple things.
You know what I mean.
Patterson is “F” Road. Highway 340 is Broadway, and even Grand further into town.  When I’m giving directions I find myself thinking more about what the street is called at that place in the road rather than how to get there. Why do we have so many different names for the same road?
In the Newsroom we often have ‘newbies’ (people who have just moved to the Grand Valley). They move here from all parts of the country. They’re always fascinated with names like J 2/10ths road and 24 ½ Road.  They find it humorous that there’s a ‘2/10’ Road. That doesn’t seem nearly as odd as the fact that the name of the road changes once you get to different parts.
If there’s a road that has multiple names and you don’t know why, comment on this blog. Or if you know why the roads are re-named I’d love to hear your thoughts.
