Volunteer to be a Volunteer
Many companies are encouraging their employees to become involved in their communities, and there’s no better way than by volunteering for organizations that have a positive impact on people’s lives. KKCO believes strongly in giving back to the community, and knows that volunteering can create camaraderie, boost pride in one's company and help with team building and leadership.

Volunteering is also an ideal way to develop knowledge. Whether you help at a hospital or distribute brochures for a local non-profit, you can gain experience through hands-on work. Since joining KKCO nearly a year ago, I’ve had rewarding opportunities volunteering for the Alzheimer’s Association, March of Dimes, and Girls on the Run - a ‘healthy living’ running club for young girls. Most recently I’ve joined the Junior Service League of Grand Junction, 'a service club of women committed to working together to improve the community through effective volunteerism and fundraising.' I am invigorated by what these amazing women have accomplished for Grand Junction’s children and the community over the past 25 years.

The benefits of volunteering not only help provide needed funding and services for our communities, but the personal rewards are immeasurable. Consider experiencing the benefits of volunteering by contacting your favorite non-profit organization, or discover unique opportunities at these websites:

Volunteering is ultimately about helping others and having an impact on people’s wellbeing. Let us know how volunteering has made a difference in your life or in the lives of your family, either through your own efforts, or as the recipient of someone else’s. Be sure to post your ideas and suggestions on where volunteers can take action in our community.

I have offered to volunteer at local Habitat for Humanity , Animal Rescue and Community Cat Care . I was either ignored or made to feel not welcome . My impression was that Grand Junction is a " closed " community -- unless you are a long-time resident . I now do volunteer work for the National Park Service ; they don't seem to mind that I was not born in Mesa County !

If McCain/Palin get elected, volunteerism will become even more of a necessity because programs designed to help people through education, healthcare, Social Security, and many other areas, will be out the door.

Thanks for the reminder, Lauren. We, as a community, have an amazing range of experiences and, along with those, have accumulated a wealth of knowledge that most simply share with their employers. Think what would happen if each member of our community shared just 5% of their time, energy, or ideas in a volunteer effort? Not only would the community benefit as a whole, but so would each individual participating whatever volunteer opportunity they choose. So take Lauren's cue and get out there and volunteer! Share your experiences, your knowledge, and, if nothing else, your energy. You, and the community, will be better for it. Thanks, Lauren, and thanks, KKC,O for having such a great member of the news team.
