Coffee Wars

Some of us at KKCO put the new McDonald’s McCafe drinks to the test! See how they stacked up against Starbucks and a favorite local coffee shop.

I spend, on average, hundreds of dollars a year on coffee. So, when McDonald’s announced that it was coming out with a line of espresso drinks, I was excited to find out how they matched up to coffee power player, Starbucks, as well as one of my favorite local joints, Coffee Muggers.

I recruited our morning show director, Charlie Lohse, morning show anchor Lauren Whitney, and 11 News reporter, Joe Gagnon, for a taste test. They all tried a cappuccino from each of the three places (Starbucks, Coffee Muggers and McDonald’s.)

The winner? McDonald’s. It was the favorite of our test group. Some of the comments were that the Starbucks cappuccino was too watered down, and the Coffee Muggers cappuccino was too strong.

Another surprise? The most expensive drink was from Starbucks. The least expensive, of course, was McDonald’s.

Now, personally, my pick is Coffee Muggers – but that’s because I love a really strong cup of coffee. What do you look for in your coffee? And if you’ve tried the different brands, let me know what you think! Leave your comments above.

Hi Brian - I agree that Traders has great coffee. My favorite drink there is the Mexican Mocha. I get a small because it has two shots of esspresso, which creates the perfect coffee/mocha balance.

I think that Traders is the best coffee in town, yet that is only one man's opinion here. I love the atmosphere and a the prices are not as bad as others and it's right there on my way to work Saint Mary's. I park and surf the web and have a great latte before starting my day!

Hi Sharae, I agree that Starbucks has been tasting watered down lately. If you like a latte or cappuccino that has a really clear taste of espresso, definitely check out Coffee Muggers. (I like Java House as well... I think there are lots of great local places in GJ.)

I think I've seen Lauren Whitney a few times at the Java House, so she must like that too. McDonald's lattes are too sweet. More like dessert. Starbucks does taste watered down. I'll have to check out Coffee Muggers.
