Top 11 Sports Stories Of 2007

We are counting down our top 11 sports stories of 2007 on our Friday night show called "11 Sports Overtime." This is what we came up with:

11. Mesa State College adds mens soccer to the athletic progams at the school and they build a brand new soccer stadium on the corner of Orchard Ave. and 12th street.

10. The Colorado Avalanche miss the playoffs for the first time since moving to Colorado in 1995 from Quebec. The Avs finished the season with 95 points, the most ever by a team to not make the playoffs in the NHL.

9. The Grand Junction Tigers boys basketball team only had a 9-10 overall record last season but they still made their mark for the future. Three underclassmen were recognized on the All-SWL teams. Geoff Baldwin mad the SWL first team as a sophomore, Calvin Rock made the first team as a junior, and Everett Robinson made the SWL second team as a sophomore.

8. Fruita Monument's Joe Meinhart won the individual state title in the 152 pound weight class in wrestling. He also won the Warrior Classic in his weight division last season.

7. The Denver Broncos made some big moves in the off season but still miss out on the playoffs. They hired Jim Bates to be the head coach of defense and signed free agent running back Travis Henry. Bates' defense rankes 30th out of 32 teams in the league, and Henry's season has been marred by injury and drug allegations.

6. The Palisade Bulldogs football team was one win away from a shot at their seventh state title in school history. Zach Adair and Aaron Wagler combined for 35 touchdowns and over 2,000 yards during the regular season. The Bulldogs lost in the semi-finals to Falcon.

5. It was the Golden Anniversary of the Junior College World Series that brought thousands of fans to watch the JUCO World Series in Grand Junction. The championship game was even nationally televised by CSTV. Chipola Junior College won the title in its first ever trip to the Series.

4. Mesa State's baseball team won a school record 18 games in a row last spring and came one win away from going to their first ever Division II College World Series in Alabama. The team finished the year ranked in the top ten.

3. The year 2007 started on a tragic note when Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed on New Years morning after attending a party in Denver. Williams was only 24 years old.

2. Mesa State's football program was back in the Division II playoffs for the first time since 2003 after finishing the regular season with a 10-1 record, second place in the RMAC. The Mavs were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs against Abilene Christian.

1. The Colorado Rockies had a magical season that culminated in a trip to the World Series. The Rockies won 21 out of 22 games to make it to the World Series before being swept by the Boston Red Sox.

Let us know what stories we missed and which stories would make your top 11 of 2007.

I thought the Bulldogs should be ranked a bit higher on your countdown. But I like all of the stories you mentioned. Thanks for your coverage.
