Fantasy Baseball Frustration

I remember when I first discovered fantasy sports online. I had just returned home in 1999 from a two year LDS Church mission to Brazil and my best friend asked me if I wanted to play fantasy basketball with him and his uncle and others on yahoo.com. I was hooked! Of course it only got better during football season, the greatest time of the year for fantasy sports.

I played it all. Fantasy basketball, football, baseball, hockey, golf, soccer, NCAA tournaments, college football pick 'em, and now even nascar. But as the years have gone by I have sifted through the different games and now usually will only play fantasy football. But as spring came around this year, so came the Major League Baseball season and once again found myself with baseball fever. I had to start getting my fix so I created a fantasy baseball league that many of my co-workers at KKCO are involved in as well. The only problem is that although many are singed up to play, none of them really want to play.

We did a live online draft in which a couple of players that I really wanted in the draft were selected shortly before my picks. Ever since the draft I have been trying almost desperately to make trades with members of our league to acquire some of the players that I really want on my team. But everyone is too afraid to pull the trigger. That's right... they are SCARED!!!

My top priority quickly became acquiring Johann Santana from KKCO Sales Manager Brad McCloud. I have made three different offers to Brad, all of which he has declined. We are still in the midst of trade talk on a daily basis mostly because I track him down at work every day when he is busy and actually has something productive to do and as him about my most recent trade offer. Thanks for letting me bug you Brad. Call me... I'm ready to throw another offer on the table!

I also decided to try to acquire my number two priority, Mets shortstop Jose Reyes from 11 News Today anchor Lauren Whitney. I made a deal that anyone I know would pull the trigger on, but not Lauren. I offered Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera (my first round pick) to the "Blonde Bombers" for Reyes, her first round pick. This kind of offer would have most fantasy baseball owners salivating at the opportunity to acquire Cabrera. Even morning reporter Joe Gagnon has asked me if Cabrera was on the block. I know Joe is listening! But Lauren wants Cabrera AND a shortstop for Reyes. What?!?!

To help you understand why I want Reyes and Santana so badly is because:  Number one, I am a Mets fan. And number two, they are good players. I think Reyes is one of the top five shortstops in the game of baseball, but he is not worth a two player trade that includes one of the top two third baseman in all of baseball. I would rank Cabrera solely behind Alex Rodriguez, but Cabrera is still my favorite to win the A.L. MVP this summer.

But if Lauren wants to play it safe and watch her team finish in the bottom half of the league this year I won't stop her. Maybe Joe can wheel and deal with Lauren to acquire Reyes. If you can do that Joe, Cabrera is all yours!!!

Lauren, I hope you didn't trade for Reyes. As you have noticed by now, Cabrera's lethal bat is still in hibernation. Also you know what happened to Tulo. Reyes is in high gear, hits, runs, SBs,#6 in Yahoo! for past month!!!! Just because he has a favorite team, doesn't mean you have to make a dumb move. Good Luck this season.

I have been playing fantasy sports for a long time. I too get frustrated when you join a league where everyone seems to be excited for the (live) draft to arrive and everyone starts drafting the best players on the board and the lasts for the first few rounds and then it turns into draft your favorite players. After the draft you start proposing trades and everytime you do they get rejected. Then comes the frustration (1)the owner that rejects your trade always thinks that you are trying to rip them off (example: Cabrera for Reyes. I think that is a good and fair trade. No way does Reyes deserve 2 players for 1) (2) A month or two into the season, all but 3 owners have given up. And yes one of those to give up is the owner that you spent so much time trying to trade. You look at his team and the player you want is on the bench because he never was put back into the starting lineup. All in all I enjoy fantasy sports, but come on people let's spicen things up and make a trade.

Posted by: Anonymous Fantasy baseball is fun. That trade to Lauren seems pretty even which makes me wonder why either of you would even do it to begin with. If you already have a great player, why get rid of him for someone of the same talent level? I guess only if he was your favorite player or something. Anyway... let us all know how your season goes and which 11 news person wins it all!

Sam. I enjoy your trade offer, in fact I think its excellent. But here is the reason I want both Cabrera and Tulo. I have no third baseman and only one short stop. So if I give you my only amazing SS then I still have the same problem, I am without a position. So I cannot justify the trade. I will just be putting myself in the same position and you would be stacked in short stops and I would have none. Joe has proposed a trade I might consider...might. We can keep discussing this.
