Hey fantasy sports players. Have you ever thought that Dungeons and Dragons geeks are sitting in their basements making fun of you? We huddle around our computers at the office talking about who scored touchdowns on Sunday, who hit home runs last night and how my underdog team has advanced to the "Sweet 16." You walk into your co-workers office to boast about your sleeper draft picks and how your strategy at winning the game is paying off. Sound at all familiar? You know it does because that is you every Monday afternoon.
Fantasy baseball, football, basketball, NASCAR, whatever... it is all a role playing game just like D&D. Sports fans/jocks have all probably taken a fair share of jabs at the kids we went to school with that would gather in their friends basements, vested in their cloaks and equipped with their die and playing cards. They would create their all-powerful characters that would go to battle against imaginary monsters and gain magical powers in their fantasy world. Basically, you can do whatever you want. Whatever you imagine, your character can do or become.
This leads me to ask a question. Who is more of a geek? The Dungeons and Dragons master or the Fantasy Baseballer?
D&D players are under the power of the "Dungeon Master." The "DM" is the one who makes up all the rules, decides how characters progress, and is the referee of all dungeon battles. (I looked it up online. It's true.)
Fantasy baseball (or football, basketball, hockey, etc.) has a "League Commissioner." The "LC" chooses how many teams will be in a league, how points are scored, which categories score points, when the draft is held, and usually has approval power of all trades.
So what's the big difference? Monsters and magic, or athletes and statistics? I think we should combine forces to make the ultimate "Fantasy Dungeons and Sports" (FD&B)! The Dungeon Master and the League Manager would work together to decide which characters are eligible for the draft and which athletes have magical powers. Each player in the FD&B league will receive one four sided die, four six sided dice, an eight sided die, and of course the ever so powerful 20 sider! The 20 sided die can only be used in a playoff situation or whether or not I can trade Alex Rodriguez for magical pitching rosin.
I am the League Commissioner in my fantasy baseball league, but I will no longer be known as Sam Farnsworth. According to the D&D name generator, I will now be known as "Seakul Forgedawn," a.k.a. "Seakul the Sorcerer." And my first round draft pick, Miguel Cabrera is no longer the third baseman for the Detroit Tigers. He is now a male dwarf barbarian known as "Markas Battleheart," a.k.a. "Markas the Barbarian."
I guess we are all geeks in our own right. There are D&D nerds, and us sports nerds. One thing is certain though... I have just rolled my eight sided die and it has told me that the last few minutes I spent reading about D&D and generating fake character names will forever be time wasted in my precious life. But my twelve sided die tells me to continue playing fantasy sports because I will find entertainment and enjoyment in the involvement thereof.
