One of the most decorated quarterbacks in the history of the National Football League wants to play football again this year but his former team - the team he brought a Super Bowl title to - does not want him back on the roster, the team does not want him near the practice field, and does not want him to ever wear the Green Bay Packers uniform again.
How bad do the Packers want to keep Brett Favre away from their team? Bad enough to offer Favre $20 million over ten years to STAY RETIRED! Who do the Packers think they are? If the guy wants to play, then let him play. If you don't want him that badly Green Bay, then why don't you just trade him to one of the dozens of teams that would proudly welcome him into camp for a shot at the playoffs or the Superbowl.
Both the Pack and Favre have been trying to work out some kind of deal but from my understanding, it appears that Favre would like to report to camp. The Packers flew all the way to Favre's home in Mississippi just to plead with him to NOT report to camp.
I have never been a Packers fan nor a Packers hater. I never cared much for Brett Favre. But this year I think it would be poetic justice for everything to go wrong at Lambeau Field. This is what I would like to see happen in 2008:
Brett Favre traded to the Minnesota Vikings. (According to reports in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the Packers have discussed the possiblity of trading Favre to the Vikings or Bears.)
The season opener is a Monday night game between the Vikings and the Packers at Lambeau Field. I would love to see Favre throw a couple of first half touchdown passes against his old team and give the Vikings a comfortable halftime lead over the Pack. Meanwhile, Aaron Rogers will throw a pick or two and will have a completion percentage below 20. When the teams leave the field for the locker rooms at the half, the fans will begin the chants, "We want Favre! We want Favre!"
By then it will be too late. The Packers organization will be humiliated beyond any point they already have in this debacle. General Manager Ted Thompson will be fired by the seasons end and will be banned from ever returning to the state of Wisconsin again.
Favre will lead the Vikings to the playoffs while Aaron Rogers will experience the growing pains of high expectations and a losing record in his first official year as a starter.
But what I want to see most is for the two parties (Favre and the Packers) to work things out yesterday already. I don't know if I can stand another day of Favre on ESPN.
