2008 High School Football Predictions

The dog days of summer are quickly passing. The Major League baseball season is coming down the final stretch towards magical October. Temperatures are slowly beginning to drop and before you know it the leaves on the trees will change their colors and we will be surrounded by that crisp autumn air. What does all of this mean? It means that high school football season is finally here!

Expectations are running high all across the Western Slope of Colorado from 1A to 5A. The Palisade Bulldogs return a majority of contributing players from last years semi-final run. The Montrose Indians have a quarterback returning for his third year as the starter. The Grand Junction Tigers have a new head coach. And the Central Warriors and Tigers are both making the jump from 4A to join the Fruita Monument Wildcats as the only schools on the Western Slope in 5A.

Keeping all of those factors in mind, myself and 11 Sports reporter Zach Kerker went ahead and ranked the schools in our coverage area from 1 to 10. We want you to make your rankings as well and tell us where we are right, and where we are wrong.

Sam's Rankings:

1. Palisade Bulldogs - I ranked them first for the reasons stated above. Palisade is a well coached team by John Arledge and two outstanding running backs in Zach Adair and Aaron Wagler. I expect this team to finish first or second in the Western Slope League and advance to the 3A State Championship game.

2. Montrose Indians - For me the Indians rank as high as they do because I really like the way Kirk English plays football for Montrose. He is in his third season as the starting quarterback and with head coach Todd Casebier at the helm, Montrose is always a contender to win the Southwestern Conference. This team has played in the state playoffs each of the past three years and this year I expect them to be there once again. The Indians will make it to at least the final eight and maybe to the semi-finals in 4A football this season.

3. Olathe Pirates - Ryan Corn came to Olathe as the head coach five seasons ago. After three years he took the Pirates to the state playoffs for the first time in years. He repeated the feat last season with nearly an entirely new cast of players. Once again this season, the Pirates don't return many key players from last seasons team, but you have to like the what Corn has done to a once irrelevant football team and has turned them into a perennial contender in the 2A state playoffs.

4. Fruita Monument Wildcats - I think the Wildcats could be one of the big suprises this year on the Western Slope. Head coach Billy Moore returns a cast of young players that were unexperienced one year ago but return this season a much more confident bunch led by Brett Nankervis at quarterback, and defensively by Huntyr Maclaskey at linebacker. Plus, the Wildcats are the only SWL team with 5A experience which should give them the edge against Grand Junction and Central.

5. Grand Junction Tigers - It is very hard for me to rank the Tigers any higher than fifth for this upcoming season, but I would be hard pressed to rank them any lower as well. To me the Tigers are a big question mark this season. They have a new head coach (Robbie Owens), new offense and defense, and return very few starters from last seasons team. Flip a coin with these guys, they could be great and they could be bad.

6. Hotchkiss Bulldogs - The Bulldogs are hidden away on the Western Slope football seen. Head coach Zac Lemon is in his second season at Hotchkiss, but the Bulldogs are making a change from 2A to 1A this season. I feel that change gives Hotchkiss the edge in the WSL having had experience against slightly bigger and better teams. Mark your calendars for September 19 when the Bulldogs face arch rival Paonia. That should be the Dogs biggest test of the season.

7. Delta Panthers - This is my sleeper pick of the year. Delta is in its second season under head coach Kirk McLaughlin and could already compete for a run to the state title game. The Panthers play in one of the toughest League's in the state with opponents like Palisade, Glenwood Springs, Rifle, and Steamboat Springs. If the Panthers beat these guys, they will be propelled high into the state rankings and could be considered a championship contender.

8. Central Warriors - Ch-ch-ch-ch-changin'! That is the theme for the Warriors this year. I don't like their chances much this season for a couple of reasons. Last year's starting quarterback Clay Kame has been moved to receiver. I like that move. I just don't know anything about new QB Holden Reed who could lack important leadership skills to lead the Warriors to the top of the Southwestern Conference. The other thing going against the Warriors is the move from 4A up to 5A. This is a three to four win team at best.

9. Paonia Eagles - I like the Eagles chances at winning the Western Slope League in 1A football this year. If they do that, then they will definitely compete for a State Championship. The eagles have a brand new head coach in Craig Cerese so all things really depend on how his players will respond to the new coach and his new style. They could win a lot, or could lose a lot.

10. Cedaredge Bruins - I ranke the Bruins last on my top ten because I really know nothing about them. I don't know who the head coach is. I don't know who plays for the Bruins. When I try calling the school, my calls go unreturned. I do know they produced one of the great defensive players at Mesa State College in Kurt Kissner. But that's about all I know.

Zach's Rankings:

1. Palisade Bulldogs

2. Montrose Indians

3. Olathe Pirates

4. Fruita Monument Wildcats

5. Hotchkiss Bulldogs

6. Paonia Eagles

7. Grand Junction Tigers

8. Delta Panthers

9. Central Warriors

10. Cedaredge Bruins

Sure Montrose is pretty good this year, but they won't win state. And Palisade is going to be very good in the playoffs, but good luck trying to get past Glenwood Springs again. But how about the Olathe Pirates!!!! 10-0 baby! They are the most underrated team on the Western Slope and are headed straight for a 2A state title! Go Pirates, Go! You'll all know what I am talking about in about a month when it is all said and done!!!

Hi Jeff. Thanks for your comments about Grand Valley. Believe it or not, tonight we are going out to shoot the Olathe vs Grand Valley game and it will be our feature game on "The Friday Night Football Blitz." As far as our failure to cover Grand Valley athletics, there is a good reason behind it. Our broadcast signal does not go as far as Parachute and Grand Valley High School. The furthest east our signal goes is to Debeque. If our signal did go further east, we would definitely go out and cover them. The other TV stations in Grand Junction go cover those schools because their broadcast signal reaches as far as Glenwood Springs and beyond. Ours does not. Anyway... I hope that helps answer your question. We cover every high school in our viewing area.

I respect all of the supportive comments for all the teams mentioned. However, I feel that it is the responsibility of nbc11news to equally represent "all" of the western slope schools. One example of failure to do so is mentioning Grand Valley who will be going into the playoffs. They face Olathe this Friday which could actually be the game of the week in Colorado. Both teams are of high quality and should fair well in the playoffs. Good luck to both but especially Grand Valley a team that has been poorly represented by nbc11news. JJ

So does the trasitive property of math say if GJ beats Durango 37-0 and Montrose beats GJ the following week 35-0, that Montrose will beat Durango 72-0? Montrose is currently 4th in 4A Power Rankings - and nobody on the front range is giving them any cred - they got us where we want em! GO INDIANS!!!

It looks like most of your predictions are spot on this year. Palisade, Montrose, Olathe, and Hotchkiss appear to be the best teams on the west slope by far. What happened to CHS, GJ, And Fruita??? They are terrible!

Central... Check, Frutia... Check, and of course GJ Shut Out Check. Some 5A teams you have up in junction. GO MONTROSE.

Posted by: Marie Location: Montrose
OOPS! Sorry Topher...looks like Montrose proved you wrong.

Posted by: shawn Location: coalgate
The Coalgate Wildcats have step it up this year a lot but noone seems to give them the credit! Were up against Davis this week but if we loose its not a big of deal as everyone makes it there ranked in the top 10 and were not! I give all the football guys on the Coalgate team credit they have stepped it up since last year.

On my comments earlier regarding the Tigers undefeated football season, I incorrectly said that it was the 2004-2005 season. In actuality it was the 2005-2006 football season, my mistake. That Tiger team was the stuff that dreams, movies and books are made of. We all miss those days! Best wishes go out to the G.J.H.S. Football Dream Team of 2006 ! You are missed by so many from the Western Slope to the Front Range and beyond. Sincerely, S.D.Garneau and the rest of your fans.

If the Warriors are predicted to be changing, why are they ranked 8th and 9th on your polls? I went to Central and they may have had their ups and downs, but they are a good team. Coach still has a lot of young players that are committed to having Central in contention of winning the SWL. Now that Reed is the new quarterback, I think that they will be a better team, and Nolan Curtis at running back? Have you seen that kid run? It is no surprise that he is at that position. GOOD LUCK WARRIORS!!!

It is nice to see that Zack reads Sam's blog too...

I think you are dead on Sam with Palisade at #1. Any team that can go that far in the playoffs deserves to be on the top of any preseason poll. Just look at college with Georgia and USC the top finishing colleges from last year. You always here about class and how 3A can't compete with any other division. I disagree lets have a playoff in the state of Colorado at the end of the season with all the state champions!

Did you see Fruita on Saturday? They looked great! I think you should ranke them 2 behind only Palisade. They would whoop Montrose or Olathe any day of the week. I can't wait til Fruita plays Montrose now just to show you were wrong.

I think you did good on picking Delta as your sleeper pick. This year's team is really good. They can hang with Palisade and Glenwood also they have a strong junior class that has some amazing athletes like Gene White who is playing on a torn ACL. They also have an outstanding QB in Austin Watson and an amazing athlete in Cory Hilborne. GO PANTHERS!!!

I think that all 3 teams in G.J. will struggle in 5A; it will be some time before they can compete with front range teams. But there is a bigger issue. With the supposed addition of two new high schools, where will they play? I find it laughable that Mesa State and local high school teams share one field. I know of the recent upgrades at Lincoln Park, but please. Seven teams on one field? I am sure that there can be a way to construct a football field for the high schools, but on a smaller scale. Which begs the question: why the move to 5A in the first place? With the addition of two new high schools, the enrollment of the other four high schools will decrease. Will they all move down a class, again?

I'm very suprised that the tigers are not on your top. Even though they have a new coach and team doesn't mean that they are going to play horribly. GO TIGERS!!!!!!

Posted by: Haywood Location: Grand Jct
Interesting rankings. Looking at the SWL Montrose is the champ until someone beats them. Fruita lost RB Cody bell and that will hurt. Central has the best skill kids with Kame, Reed, Blaine Jackson, Nolan Curtis and transfer Derrek Stoffel but the line may have questions. Grand Jct has a new coach, new system, a new QB, they are replacing both lines, and only 5 kids with any varsity experience souds like a long year. My pick is Central for the SWL Championship.

Are you kidding me? The Tigers are way better than that! I can't believe you guys don't have them in the top three. There is no doubt they will win the SWL this year! GO TIGERS!!!
