Oklahoma city (AP) Lawmakers in Oklahoma are shelving a bill that would have allowed military veterans and other people who've had firearms training to carry concealed weapons on college campuses.

State republicans and democrats say they made a joint decision to leave the bill off the agenda of the committee where it would have been debated.

Sponsors of the bill argued that it would improve campus safety. Their reasoning is that guns in the hands of people with the proper training could avert deadly shooting episodes like the catastrophe at Virginia Tech a year ago.

But educators and students don't agree. University of Oklahoma president David Boren says the measure would have hurt student and faculty recruitment. He also notes the dilemma for police trying to figure out whether somebody with a gun is a threat or not.
