GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- The last time that Central High School had a winning record in the SWL was the fall of 2008.

The Warriors have steadily declined in the years since, hitting rock bottom last year with an 0-4 league record and a 2-8 overall mark.

According to the players, that history has lit a fire in their bellies as they prepare for a different outcome in the 2012 season.

"We have to be more competitive," said head coach Vern McGee during practice on Wednesday. "Last year was a disappointment because we had a lot of seniors we thought would do better than we did.

"So, we've been working on discipline stuff and making sure everyone is on the same page and we've got to do the little things right if we're going to turn this thing around."

The Warriors are also hoping to take advantage of an SWL that won't feature a Sean Rubalcaba-led Grand Junction team. And as far as superstars go, McGee doesn't want that type of player on his team.

"Hopefully we're just a solid team and we get a team effort each week," he said. "Hopefully it will be somebody just having a good game for us. Every week, everybody being solid: that's the goal for us."

The Warriors open the season against Palisade on August 31st.
