GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Taylor Sanchez accounted for six Central touchdowns as the Warriors beat up on Hinkley, 48-23 for their first win of the season.
In front of a homecoming crowd at Stocker Stadium, the Warriors watched the Thunderbirds jump out to a 10-0 lead thanks in large part to wide receiver Jon Newsom who had a 56-yard reception and a 73-yard touchdown reception.
But Sanchez took over from there. He scrambled for a 26-yard score to put Central on the board, and then punched one in from inside the 1-yard line to give the Warriors a 14-10 lead. After Hinkley QB Mike Davis hit Newsom with another TD pass, Sanchez responded with another QB sneak from the 1-yard line to make it 21-17 Central.
Hinkley (1-3) had a chance to take the lead before halftime but Davis was picked off in the endzone by Trevor Ketchum-Marlow. The senior also recovered a fumble earlier in the half which was caused by Tyler Hernandez.
After trailing 17-14, the Warriors (1-3) outscored Hinkley 34-6 the rest of the way.
Vern McGee's team will kick-off league play on September 30th against Fruita Monument.
