GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - A local middle school is taking computer class to the next level, and beyond.

East Middle School students are learning computer skills by producing a weekly newscast on station KEMS. The students work four days a week to prepare a show that's shown to the school on Fridays.

The teacher in charge of the class, Jennifer Quigley, says students learn everything from computer editing programs, to mixing audio, writing skills to public speaking, and with it all being broadcast, there's that extra incentive for good work, "They can see it and hear it and it comes over the school, so it makes them work a little harder, and if they make a mistake everybody sees it too, so they're aware of that," she says.

Quigley says the class started nine years ago with just a camera and two VCRs.

She says since then it's grown through help and grants, and of course, the dedication of the students it educates.
