GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Some bright, inventive 5th graders are heading off to a state competition in Denver after winning first place at the Regional Destination Imagination competition in Rifle.

The team designed an award-winning catapult that launched them into first place. They've been working together since first grade in the after-school program called Destination Imagination.

It's a nationwide non-profit organization that challenges students to be inventive.

"Destination Imagination always involves some sort of skit and scheme. This years theme for them was D.I. Bot. And so they had to design a skit and that helps someone change their life and had to us robotic technology," says Jennifer Osborn, team manager.

The students' launching mechanism can help someone in a wheelchair play catch with their dog.

They were only competitors from Grand Junction and if they win at the state level, they'll head to Knoxville, Tennessee for the nationwide competition in May.
