GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - As School District 51 works to close a projected $10 million budget hole, officials say they have no choice but to raise athletic fees.
Fees will increase from $70 per sport to $110 per sport for high school students during the 2011-2012 school year. The district says families will only be required to pay up to $440 per year.
District 51 Athletic and Activities Coordinator Paul Cain told school board members Monday night each school has mechanisms in place to help students who can't afford the fees and that no student will ever be turned away from sports because of money.
Middle school athletic fees will increase from $30 per sport to $50 per sport.
Officials point out that even with the increase, fees are comparable and in some cases cheaper than fees local private athletic leagues charge.
