GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - District 51 students will continue to go to school five days a week next year -- at least for now.

The school board voted 5-0 to adopt a traditional five day calendar for the 2011-2012 school year, despite conversations about switching to a four-day week or year-round school.

The resolution states:

"WHEREAS, currently 44 percent of the student population in Mesa County Valley School District 51 is at
or below the poverty level, defined by government standards, and currently the unemployment rate in Mesa
County is 10.2 percent and is not projected to improve in the near future: The Board of Education does not
want to place additional burdens on the community."

Board members did caution, however, that looming cuts could force them to take another look at switching to an alternative calendar.
