Local Students Hit High Note in All State Ensembles

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - More than a dozen local students struck a chord with state judges, being selected for the top high school performing groups in Colorado.

Members of the All State Band, Jazz Band, Orchestra, and Chorus were recognized Tuesday night during the District 51 School Board meeting.

The All State Band is made up of the top 110 students in the state who audition. Students must pass a live audition and meet academic eligibility through their schools. The local students selected to All State Band and Jazz Band were:

Adam Kattnig (FMHS)
Melissa Tjandra (FMHS)
Corey Aday (PHS)
Laura Borovillos (PHS)
Chris Hoback (PHS)
Kimberly Labine (PHS)
Keith Allen (PHS)

The All State Orchestra is made up of the top 115 string players in the state. More than 500 students audition each year. The local students selected to the All State Orchestra were:

Courtlyn Carpenter (FMHS)
Bailey Hilty (GJHS)
Amanda Johnson (GJHS)
Kierra Aiello (GJHS)
Andrew James (GJHS)
Alice Kerbein (PHS)
Tiana Mihalich (PHS)

This year 434 students were selected from around the state for three different choirs (men's, women's, mixed choir). More than 2,200 auditioned. In addition to their tryout, students have to be academically eligible through their schools. The local students who were selected to the All State Choir were:
