GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - A lot of teachers eventually come back home to work in the local school district. But one local teacher did one better: going back to the school where she was once a student.

We’ll tell you who’s Making the Grade this week.

Today, Jennifer Strasser is a second grade teacher at Nisley Elementary. But not too long ago, she was one of those second graders, sitting in the same chairs, in the same building.

And she's here today in part because Nisley gave her the support she needed to succeed.

She is the first recipient of the Nisley Scholarship, which supports graduating high school seniors who are Nisley alumni.

Education has always been Jennifer’s career focus, and her second graders love the fact that their teacher was once in their shoes.

"They really connect to that, and they find that really cool that you know, their teacher was a student here... And then they can see that someone from here has gone out and done something with their life,” says Strasser.

The fact that her career has brought her back to Nisley is something she hopes will inspire her students. Jennifer says it was surreal getting placed at her old elementary school, and that her education has really come full circle.

Jennifer received the scholarship back in 2004 when she graduated from Central High School.

Today, Nisley is keeping their scholarship program strong, thanks in large part to staff donations. The Nisley Scholarship is awarded every year to two students in the amount of $1000 each. The award is given to encourage Nisley alumni to go to college.
