GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- In the State of the County address Wednesday morning, the Mesa County Board of Commissioners announced they are optimistic for a profitable new year.

Chairman of the Board of Commisioners Craig Meis revealed Wednesday that Mesa County witnessed a 6.98% rise in sales-tax revenues between 2010 and 2011. Meis stated that sales-tax revenue is one of the more accurate ways to gauge the community's confidence in the economy. Thus, Mesa County's local economy appears to be heading in the right direction.

Foreclosure filings in the county also decreased by approximately 20% from 2010 to 2011, marking the first decrease in yearly filings since 2008. However, the county still registered over 4,000 new unemployment claims between December of 2010 and December of 2011.

Meis also stated that the county expects to save around $260,000 in expenses by consolidating departments and services into the newly-opened Mesa County Central Services building. The Board of Commissioners is planning to invest that money into capital infrastructure, such as roads and bridges, as well as putting an end to a two-year salary freeze on the county's employees.

Excellent report. Taking the extra step and interviewing the personnel person was a nice touch.

Why is this station and others ignoring the fact that we are not getting our tax money back from the City in accordance with TABOR? We can care less about the bright future of Government.
