Mesa Cty promotes Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- With May being National Teen Pregnancy Prevention month, the Mesa County Health Department is doing its part to keep teen birth rates on the decline in Colorado.

Although Mesa County's rate of teen births declined between the years 2007 and 2010, the county's rate is still higher than the state as a whole.

One can assume that the heightened levels of accessibility to contraceptives, such as the morning-after and birth control pills, have factored into the state's lowest teen birth rate in the last 20 years. Yet, Mesa County official Kristy Emerson agrees that parent-teen dialogue regarding sexual activity plays an impressive part in keeping teens safe if they are sexually active.

The county Health Department offers Parent Communication workshops for any parents who are unsure of how to approach the "Birds and the Bees" talk.

The next workshop available is Tuesday, June 26th. It's offered at the Community Services Building at 510 29 1/2 Rd. The class is 2 hours long. It begins at 6:00pm

Check out the "Get Real" Program through Hilltop. H-Top as an organization sucks. They don't pay employees half of what they are worth and suck the public sector dry for donations. The "Get Real" program is the best thing H-Top has going for it.
