Local self-defense instructor teaches street-smart skills

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo (KKCO) -- Dave Keech, owner of DK self-defense training, has years of martial arts experience and is dedicated to teaching self-defense techniques no matter your size, weight, skill, and gender.

"You see a lot of things on Facebook and the news about women getting attacked,” said Stacie Monte, a self-defense student. “I just feel that it’s especially important for the younger generation to learn how to defend themselves in any situation and be aware of their surroundings."

Keech said it’s important to always be alert.

"People are busy…you see a lot of people walking along the street looking at their cell phone not paying attention,” said Keech. “If I was the bad guy, before you even know it, I’m on top of you."

Local women are taking safety into their own hands by learning how to protect and defend themselves.

“We are not looking at a long fight,” said Keech. “You take care of what you need to take care of and get out of there.”

Keech’s class teaches women how to react in a real-life situation, beginning with some basic martial arts techniques.

“In a real fight you don't know how or when they’re going to come at you,” said Keech. “In a real fight blocking is very difficult…we look at protecting the head because that's what going to get you knocked out.

Self-defense is also about knowledge of your surroundings and awareness of dangerous situations.

"I just hope that with a little bit of knowledge and a little bit of defense people will be able to avoid those situations,” said Keech. “And if for some reason, they’re not able to avoid that situation, they’re at least able to protect themselves if they have to."

Another tip from Keech is to step into the bad guy’s shoes. Look around and see who is an easy target. Then, avoid being that target.
