GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- City leaders are considering changing the names of a couple busy roads in Grand Junction.
The initiative is being led by CMU20000, which was recently launched by the Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce to promote the growth of Colorado Mesa University to 20,000 students on campus.
The group is discussing changing the name of North Avenue to University Boulevard and 12th Street to Maverick Way.
It was discussed Monday night at Grand Junction City Council. CMU20000 believes it's an opportunity for the city to show its support for the university's growth and to bring the city together. The change could come as soon as the first quarter 0f 2018.
Monday night's meeting was reportedly informal, so no decisions were made. A request to approve the name change will be made at the next city council meeting. In the meantime, council members can request more information or direct staff to conduct research or prepare reports about the efforts.
