FBI searches Montrose funeral home; former employee talks about experiences

MONTROSE, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- The FBI swarmed Sunset Mesa Funeral Directors in Montrose early Tuesday morning, after last month's accusations that they have also been working as a body broker, buying and selling body parts.

"This isn't right,” said a former employee who spoke under anonymity,

A search warrant was executed by the FBI Monday, and crews were busy collecting evidence and taking pictures of the inside of the building and the company car.

"Sometimes a whole body goes out and only portions of the body come back,” said the former employee.

The former employee said the body brokering has been going on for years.

"I couldn't handle the things that were going on here that I knew about,” the former employee said. "There was the fact that they kept bodies in the freezer with the flowers that they did for the funerals. I felt that that was disrespectful."

The former employee said Megan Hess, the owner of the funeral home, also owns the flower shop and signature events building next door.

"Sometimes there were bodies in the kitchen area where they ate and they may or may not have been covered. They may or may not have been there for a long time,” said the former employee.

It was a busy morning with both police and FBI coming and going. The owner did not return any phone calls.

Hess released a statement last month calling the news reporting and any FBI scrutiny "fake news".

She also said in part... "I have worked tirelessly in Western Colorado for more than 15 years to proudly serve my community as a funeral director” and "it has been devastating to read such false statements about my business and character."

The alleged former employee says once a client has agreed to donate their loved one's body, it is then shipped off around the world for medical research, at a profit, not for donation.

"These people who donated their families bodies to her-- they thought that they were doing a good thing. They didn't know that they were giving her the bodies and then she was turning around and selling them,” said the former employee.
