GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- The Grand Valley showcased what it has to offer to the arts and cultural community at the third annual art expo.
Kids got a chance to try their musical chops at the expo.
"It gets your brain thinking...and musicians are usually better students," said Cyndie Hogan, a general board member of the Centennial Band.
It's one way the art festival showcases the value of the creativity and learning.
"There is everything from performing arts to fine arts, there is the whole gambit," said Darcy Johnson, the chair of the Grand Junction Arts and Cultural Commission.
Organizers said the ability for kids to express themselves helps their education.
"Study after study has shown that math skills, science skills benefit from being able to use the creative side," said Johnson.
That's where expos like this take part in art come in handy. It gives people of all ages the exposure to creativity.
"We had a not quite two year old come up, and when he got a sound out of the drum, his eyes just lit up and he got so excited," said Hogan.
US News repoirts funds have been cut in more than 80 percent of U.S. school districts since 2008. The very first programs to go are often disciplines such as music and art.
"By limiting children's' access to the arts, we're actually limiting their access to being a rounded human being," said Hogan.
It's not all about education, as this expo aims to show arts are also good for the soul.
"It also helps me relax and it's also just for me," said Hogan.
The event is about bringing the community and art organizations together. Nothing was for sale. They simply wanted to help spread awareness about what's here in the Grand Valley.
