County commissioners to honor Navy SEAL killed in parachuting accident

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- Mesa County commissioners on Thursday announced they will honor a Navy SEAL killed during an airborne demonstration.

Petty Officer 1st Class Remington J. Peters, who had ties to Grand Junction was killed during a parachuting stunt in May at Liberty State Park for New York Fleet Week.

Peters, 27, was part of the parachuting team called the Leap Frogs. He joined the Navy after graduating from Grand Junction High School in 2008. He was a veteran of two combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan before joining the Leap Frogs.

On Aug. 14 at 9 a.m., at a public hearing at the Old Courthouse at 544 Rood Avenue, in Grand Junction, the commissioners will adopt a proclamation in honor and memory of Peters. The public is invited to attend.
