DELTA, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) -- Edgar Macias-Moreno appeared via teleconference from the Delta County Jail Wednesday for a hearing on charges he's facing in the death of his girlfriend.
Investigators say Macias-Moreno admitted to strangling his girlfriend, Madeline Loh, in their home last month near Hotchkiss after a physical fight over money owed to their former employer.
The hearing was brief and set a formal preliminary hearing for August 1.
Macias-Moreno did not speak but his best friend did after the hearing.
"I wake up every morning saying it's a lie," said Val Entecampos. "It's not true, I can't believe what's going on."
Entecampos worked with Loh and Macias-Moreno, and described Loh as always happy, and Macias-Moreno as a popular athlete.
He says this isn't the Edgar he knew.
"He just got mixed up with drugs," Entecampos said. "It's a good lesson to learn what's happening right here."
Entecampos said he will continue to support his friend, but wants to know what went through Macias-Moreno's head when he killed Loh.
Macias-Moreno is being held in the Delta County Jail on a $10 million bond for charges including first-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping, motor vehicle theft and identity theft.
