More parking for downtown Grand Junction?

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- More parking could be coming to the downtown Grand Junction area soon.

The city manager went before the council at their meeting on Wednesday night to ask to enter into a contract to buy land where the old Wells Fargo drive-thru is located at 261 Ute Avenue.

The council unanimously approved the request.

The parking lot has been unused for quite some time now, so the city wants to purchase the land and demolish the drive-thru and then add in parking that could be used for both the convention center and downtown area.

"We see this is as a key strategic purpose as we continue to develop in the southwest portion of our downtown...especially as we look to make improvements to the Two Rivers Convention Center and expand that facility," said City Manager Greg Caton.

The city is looking to close on the purchase later this month and start the demolition process early next year.

No word yet on how many spots there will be.
