Victim, suspects ID'd in 28 1/4 Road shooting

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Two men have been arrested in connection with a deadly shooting in Grand Junction.

It happened around 9 p.m. Wednesday in the 400 block of 28 1/4 Road.

The Mesa County Coroner identified the victim as Dion Nixon of Grand Junction. The cause of death is gunshot wounds of the abdomen, and
head and the manner of death is homicide.

Nixon, 38, died from his injuries at St. Mary's Hospital.

A witness on scene, who did not live in the area, said the victim went by the name "Lazy."

Richard Byrd, 48, of Grand Junction, was arrested without incident around 7 a.m. in the 2700 block of B 1/2 Road, according to police. Rufus Billups, 41, of Grand Junction, was arrested, as well, around 6 a.m. in the 2900 block of Bunting Avenue.

Both men are in the Mesa County Jail, facing first degree murder charges.

Police said the affidavits have been sealed by the court, so there's no further information on what happened. They said booking photos of the suspects will be released after more interviews with witnesses.
