RIFLE, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- A Rifle man wanted for shooting and killing his son-in-law almost six months ago was arrested in Oregon Monday.
According to Rifle Police, Michael Montgomery was spotted leaving a church that provides meals for the needy.
Montgomery has been wanted on a first-degree murder warrant ever since Christopher Gallegos was found dead outside of an apartment building in the 2600 block of Acacia Avenue in Rifle March 29.
At the time, police said it was “not a random act” but would not provide many details other than to say a gun was involved.
According to Rifle Police, Montgomery was arrested by the Ontario Police Department and High Desert Drug Task Force in Ontario, Oregon. Montgomery had established a campsite along the Oregon/Idaho border near the Snake River and visited town on occasion.
He is currently being held at the Malheur County Jail. The County Sheriff in Oregon told The Argus Observer, that police in Colorado had contacted him saying that Montgomery was in the area.
Rifle Police say their homicide investigation remains open and active. It’s unclear when Montgomery will return to Colorado.
