FRUITA, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- If you go to the Fruita Rec Center, there's a good chance you'll see an Olympian training.

Victoria Smith is a member of the Colorado Special Olympics national team. She's sponsored by the city of Fruita, so she doesn't have to pay every time she uses the Fruita Rec Center to train.

She said she's been swimming since she was very young.

She has TAR syndrome. a rare genetic disorder that affects the arms, but she says she doesn't let it hold her back from doing what she loves.

"The pool is where I first got my independence, the pool has always been a place where I can be myself and I can be happy and I just love it," said Smith.

The national competition will be held in Seattle in July of 2018.
