A year ago Palisade's Austin Bernal rushed for over 800 yards as a junior. Now as a senior his focus is not on himself it’s on helping the Bulldog's capture a Class 3A state football championship.
He is this week’s athlete of the week.
In 2016 Austin Bernal was a threat on the offensive side of the ball racking up over 1,600 all-purpose yards, but he’s not just a one way player, on defense the senior had over 50 tackles.
Last season the Bulldogs graduated over 20 seniors on a team that went 10-2 ,so headed into this season Bernal's class knew they would have to step up out on the grid iron.
“The coaches and all of us have put in a lot of work knowing what we lost and I think the starting group this year is just as good. I think we will have just as much success as last year, “said Bernal.
The impact Bernal has on the field speaks for itself, but it is what he shows off the field that makes him standout from others.
“The good thing about him is great leadership, great competitiveness, and just a solid student athlete for us here, “said Palisade head coach Joe Ramunno.
In the bulldogs first game of the season Bernal rushed for 77 yards and had over 10 tackles on the defensive side of the ball.
The Bulldogs took down rival Central 20-14 in overtime last Friday but now the task gets even tougher. Bernal and Palisade will play host to 3A power house Holy Family this upcoming Friday night at Stocker Stadium.
