HS Basketball: Fruita ends Sweet 16 drought, advances to Great 8

The quarterfinals have been Fruita girls basketball's Achilles heel. The Wildcats have fallen in the Sweet 16 of the CHSAA 5A Girls State Basketball Tournament in each of the last three seasons.

It would end at three after the No. 1 Wildcats defeated No. 16 Denver East, 57-33.

"We've kind of had this as a goal for a long time and to lose in this round three times in a row we just felt fortunate to kind of get that monkey off our back a little bit," said head coach Michael Wells.

Senior Angelique Gall led all scorers with 23 points.

"We gave our heart out there when we were playing," said Gall "If we keep continuing to do that and trusting in each other and trusting in our program and our coaches and our community, I think we're going to be able to go all the way."

Fellow senior Riley Snyder added 17 in the victory.

The Wildcats will take on No. 8 Fossil Ridge in the Great 8 round on March 2 at the Denver Coliseum.
