Mesa County Sheriff
Making Your Vote Count
Reporter: Natalie Pallone
In 1883 the Governor of Colorado appointed Mesa County's first Sheriff. Two years later, residents took on the responsibility of electing the next Sheriff. Over one hundred years later, residents will soon be making the choice yet again.
In 2003 Mesa County Sheriff Stan Hilkey was sworn into office after spending 17 years with the agency. In 2000 after a lengthy 27 years with the sheriff's office, Bob Silva decided to run.
Now, both men are looking ahead to election day, Hilkey hoping to keep his position as Mesa County's current Sheirff and Silva hoping the third time running for this office is a charm.
The Sheriff's office is also responsible for serving civil papers, courthouse security, transporting inmates, search & rescue, wildland fire fighting, and issuing concealed weapons permits.
