Pick Up America beautifies Mesa County

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo (KKCO) The non-profit group has been picking up trash for two years. The movement started in Maryland and worked it's way west to Colorado Six volunteers, including two Colorado Mesa University students, junior Shannon Howard, 22, an elementary education major from Littleton, Colorado, and junior Mikala Coster, 23, a nursing major from Aurora, Colorado, picked up 337 pounds of trash in 5.6 miles Saturday.

The group started on the CMU camps and worked their way south to Highway 50. Volunteers say the process took longer than normal because they picked up a lot of "fluffy trash," or packing materials made of styrofoam. They say the trash was really brittle, and consisted of broken down polymers. They also say Mesa County was cleaner than Delta county.

"It was really sad for me to see all of this trash outside of the school I work at," says Howard, as the group picked up trash outside of Dos Rios Elementary School.

The group will pick up more trash in Mesa County Sunday, and cordially invite you to join them. They'll be meeting at noon at Colorado Mesa University, parking lot R7. That's at the intersection of 12th street and Kennedy Avenue.
