Family activities are a big part of every holiday, and Thanksgiving is no different. From taking in a football game on the couch with dad, to breaking the wishbone, here are the five most popular 'fun things' to do with the family this Thanksgiving!
1. A Feast of Turkey with all the Trimmings
From the first Thanksgiving, to present day, this is a big holiday for big birds.
Ninety percent of households report serving turkey with their Thanksgiving feasts. Another 50 percent also serve turkey, instead of ham, at Christmas.
Whether you roast it all day, or throw it in the deep fryer, one thing is for sure, Americans gobble down their share of turkey!
2. Football: An American Tradition
NFL football on Thanksgiving has become as big an American tradition as turkey, mashed potatoes, or pumpkin pie! Since popularity surged over a classic match-up between the Lions and the Chicago Bears in 1934, each year brings a new rivalry into our family's living rooms. For something new this year, instead of napping during half-time, head outside and have your own Thanksgiving football game!
3. Breaking the Wishbone
Does your family fight over who gets to break the wishbone? This is a tradition dating back to the Etruscans in 322 B.C. - and it started with a hen, not a turkey! It was a superstition held by some at the time that animals were mystical and could tell the future.
Two people would take hold of the bone, much like we do today, and whoever got the bigger piece was thought to have their wish come true, resulting in the "lucky break".
4. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
For the last 80 years, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has kicked off the holiday season with elaborate bands, balloons and floats. The first parade was seen in 1924, with Felix the Cat premiering as the first giant balloon. Over the years, many more cartoons have joined the infamous parade, like Garfield, Superman, and even Sesame Street's Grover. One thing remains every year, this pageantry is an exciting and effective way to kick off the Christmas shopping season! And while you might not be able to see it in person, it's a nice break away on the couch with family and friends.
5. Giving Thanks
Football, turkeys, and parades aside, the most important reason for Thanksgiving is family, friends, and daily blessings. Whether you lead a prayer at the family table, or volunteer at a local soup kitchen, remember to take time out to count your blessings and be grateful for all of life's happiness.
