DENVER (AP) -- Hundreds of families had gathered for the free weekly jazz concert. Police spokesman Sonny Jackson says officers were trying to break up a confrontation at City Park on Sunday night, around the time the band was wrapping up, when shots were fired. The shots sent scores of park goers running.

The officer was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

What a tragedy! There has to be more to the story. Drugs or gangs? Just how angry can simple jazz fans be? Most jazz concerts I have been to have been pretty calm group of folks. More will come out in the future.

I'm sure the shooter(s) had a concealed weapon, even though illegal in the city of Denver. This needs to be changed, otherwise, only the thugs will carry guns and we are all in danger. May the officer rest in peace and may his family know how grateful many of us are for his service to his community.
