GRAND JUNCTION, Colo (KKCO) Grand Junction firefighters invite the community to stop by several locations around town to donate to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

The Fire Department's MDA Coordinator Derek Trombetta said, "Its really nice because you actually see where the money goes. Today (Saturday) we have Shane out here and we actually know that us doing this weekend and the community giving this weekend has helped him buy his wheelchair."

100 percent of the funds raised this weekend will stay in the state of Colorado and 77 percent will be used in the Western Slope area.

Last year, the funds raised helped purchase a wheelchair for Shane Waltz, a local elementary school student who was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy 5 years ago.

Waltz grandmother, Dana Michaels said, "When we first started noticing something he walked on his tippy toes which I think is pretty standard, not real coordinated, he had a lot of falls, as he began to lose muscle mass it typically begins with the legs."

Michaels goal is to maintain her grandson's quality of life, working to ensure that his muscle do not atrophy.

"He would love sports so anybody that would play ball with him or he does the special Olympics, but he likes the things normal kids do... he's a normal boy."

Last year the GJFD raised $6,000 for MDA and the International Firefighters Association has raised $300 million, since 1954.

To donate to this very important cause stop by the City Market, Wal-Mart or the Albertsons this weekend.
