HS FOOTBALL: FMHS 21, Montrose 27

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- The Montrose Indians leaned on three touchdowns from Cameron Jones to overtake the Fruita Monument Wildcats 27-21.

Montrose (8-1, 3-1) got the scoring started in the first quarter when Drew Casebier connected with Jones for a 38-yard touchdown. Fruita came back and Vince Grasso tied the game on the next drive.

The Indians grabbed the lead on a safety as Jacob Lynch fumbled the snap in his own endzone. Lynch then gave up a pick-six to Jones to cap off the first half scoring. Montrose went into halftime with a 15-7 lead.

But FMHS made some noise in the second half. With under four minutes to play, Grant Black found Zach Griggs for a touchdown to make it 21-19 Montrose. The Wildcats went for two and converted on a Vince Grasso run to tie the game, 21-21.

After FMHS got the ball back, Black was intercepted by Glen Fluker. With just seconds remaining, Drew Casebier threw to the endzone, had his pass tipped, and then caught by Jones for the go-ahead touchdown. The extra point was no good, making the score 27-21 Montrose.

The Wildcats were unable to do anything with their final possession.

Fruita Monument ends their season at 4-5 overall and 2-2 in SWL play. Montrose will conclude their regular season next week against Durango.
