GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Jerreon Dennis had four touchdowns and Austin Berk accounted for three turnovers on the defensive side of the ball as No. 1 Grand Junction topped Fruita Monument 42-14 in an SWL game at Stocker Stadium on Friday.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 14-7 lead thanks to a pair of Vince Grasso touchdown runs. Grasso finished with 121 rushing yards on the night.
Grand Junction (8-0, 3-0) tied the game on Dennis' second touchdown run (71 yards) and then took the lead on a 5-yard run by Kimani Robinson. Junction expanded their lead to 28-14 when Sean Rubalcaba hooked up with Chandon Rose on a 5-yard fade route.
The Tigers defense forced three fumbles and an interception in the first half to build the 28-14 halftime lead. Fruita Monument (4-4, 2-1) forced two Tiger fumbles in the first half.
Dennis ended up with 289 yards rushing to go with the four touchdowns. He now has 21 touchdowns on the season, which leads all 5A running backs. Rubalcaba was 5 of 8 through the air for 76 yards and the one touchdown.
FMHS senior quarterback Zach Thorpe, who rushed for 57 yards, left the game in the third quarter with an apparent head injury. He was taken to a nearby hospital to be monitored.
