Sam Safken is a former standout athlete at Fruita Monument High School. Sam passed away from cancer shortly after graduating from high school and as a result his family has set up The Sam Safken Foundation to help carry on his legacy and help the community in good causes.
The Foundation specifically provides funds for underprivileged youth to participate in Grand Valley athletics.
The 3-on-3 basketball tournament in Safken's honor begins on March 21 at Mesa State College. Teams can register for $60 per team. No less than three players per team and no more than four players per team are allowed.
There are four different divisions for both boys and girls. There will be a 5th-6th grade division, 7th-8th grade division, 9th-12th grade division, and an open division for adults (anyone post high school or older.)
